Ode to the Century City food court
I forgot my lunch today. I can't seem to remember to grab the TJ's salad from the fridge whenever I get one, so I ended up walking over to Century City and getting lunch at the food court. What a gloriously botched effort this place is: Your choice of Harper's Express, Panda Express, Coral Tree Express, Italia Express, American Express, et al, with food served on real plates with real silverware and glasses made of glass. But the architects screwed up big time and the acoustic reflections are such that eating inside is an experience akin to eating in the middle of a construction site.
Nevertheless, I decided to get some gyros from falafel and pita express and do a bit of reading over lunch. For noon on a weekday, it was reasonably uncrowded, and since Century City has become "our mall" for my wife and I, it has the benefit of familiarity as well (last summer I once spent an hour in the food court with manuscript paper and a CD walkman transcribing some bass parts to prepare for an audition while my wife tried to find a dress she liked for a friend's wedding). There are some new additions that I've not had a chance to check out. The Ummmba Grill Express by the newstand express or the Breadbar Express downstairs by the Borders Express which has the advantage of having parking unlike the Breadbar on 3rd.
And I'll certainly go back, if only because I'm so damned lousy at remembering to bring my own lunch.
